Every vehicle takes a specific group size battery. You can find this information in your owner’s manual, on a sticker under the hood, or printed on the battery itself. If you’re not sure, just bring the old battery in or give us your year, make, and model — we’ll look it up for you in seconds.
Most automotive batteries last between 3 and 5 years, depending on climate, driving habits, and how well the charging system is maintained. Extreme heat actually wears batteries down faster than cold — but cold weather is when weak batteries tend to fail. Here in Northeast Ohio, that means winter is the real stress test.
A starting battery delivers a short, powerful burst of energy to crank an engine. A deep cycle battery is designed to provide steady power over a longer period — like running a trolling motor, powering a golf cart, or backing up a UPS system. Using the wrong type can shorten battery life significantly. If you’re not sure which you need, just ask us.
CCA stands for Cold Cranking Amps. It measures how much power a battery can deliver at 0°F for 30 seconds while maintaining adequate voltage. The higher the CCA, the more starting power the battery has in cold conditions. This matters a lot here in Northeast Ohio where winter mornings can drop well below freezing.
AGM stands for Absorbed Glass Mat. It’s a type of sealed lead-acid battery that’s spill-proof, vibration-resistant, and maintenance-free. AGM batteries are common in modern vehicles with start-stop technology, and they’re popular for marine, powersports, and commercial applications. They cost more upfront but typically last longer and perform better under demanding conditions.
Flooded (wet cell) batteries are the traditional type — they’re less expensive and work well for standard applications, but they can leak, require occasional maintenance, and are less resistant to vibration. AGM batteries are sealed, maintenance-free, handle vibration and deep cycling better, and have a longer lifespan. We carry both types and can help you decide which makes sense for your application and budget.
Common signs include: slow or sluggish engine cranking, needing frequent jump starts, dim headlights when idling, the battery warning light on your dashboard, a swollen or bloated battery case, or a battery that’s more than 4 years old. If you’re experiencing any of these, it’s time to get it checked or replaced before you’re stranded.
